While synthetic wigs and hair fibres have come a long way in recent years, nothing matches genuine human hair. For those who experience hair loss, a hair replacement system can provide a sense of normality and a confidence boost.
They can, however, cost a motza and the quality you desire can be hard to come by. That’s why human hair donations are still accepted widely across Australia, making it a worthwhile consideration for anyone going under the shears.
One wig can take up to 20 ponytails, with plenty of organisations accepting dyed and grey hair. If your hair is bleached or recovering from an old colour job, maybe give this post a miss and donate or volunteer in other ways.
Thinking of making a donation? Here’s where to look.
Requirements: 20cm+ or 8 inches in length (laying flat). Chemically processed or coloured hair is accepted, as is any hair type. In the spirit of recycling, they will also accept 100% human hair extensions. Sustainable Salons will also accept hair clippings and short trimmings to be used to clean ocean oil spills.
Requirements: 35.5cm+ or 14 inches (pulled straight). No colour or chemical treatment (all-grey accepted).
Requirements: 30cm or 12 inches in length of untreated, uncoloured hair.
Requirements: 36cm+ or 14 inches, undyed with no colour or chemical treatment.
FOR HAIRDRESSERS:
Always check the requirements of your client’s chosen organisation to ensure the ponytail is properly dried, secured and stored for donation. Take before and after photos and revel in a good deed!
